Accused Duff Stalker Claims Innocence
Nov 07, 2006 - 20:05
The 18-year-old Russian man arrested Friday for threatening to kill Hilary Duff pleaded not guilty Tuesday to a felony stalking charge. Duff and boyfriend Joel Madden filed for restraining orders Oct. 12 against Maksim Myaskovskiy and his 50-year-old roommate, self-proclaimed celebrity photog David Joseph Klein, claiming that Myaskovskiy was obsessed with the Lizzie McGuire star and since July had stepped up his efforts to get in touch with her, using Klein as a liaison. According to police, Myaskovskiy told a private investigator from celebrity security firm Sunset Protective Services and Investigations that he was planning to take Duff out at an event she was scheduled to attend on Sunday. Authorities subsequently nabbed the teenager for making criminal threats and stalking, picking him up at the Residence Inn he had been staying at in Manhattan Beach. During Tuesday's arraignment, Myaskovskiy's bail was raised from $200,000 to $1 million, and another hearing was set for Nov. 22 to determine whether there's enough evidence to require a trial. Duff also sought protection last month for her mother, Susan, and sister, Haylie, while her rocker beau included his twin brother and Good Charlotte band mate Benji Madden in his petition. Court documents filed in October stated that Myaskovskiy moved from Russia to Los Angeles two years ago solely to hook up with Duff and that he threatened to buy a gun and, among other things, commit suicide if she didn't return the sentiment. Myaskovskiy then allegedly threatened to get rid of the enemies—including Madden—who stood in his way.
